September 15, 2021One of our mentees, Mrs Subashni Hemrajh from Fairbreeze Combined School is sharing her experience about our Teach Like a Champion program. Here’s what she had to say…
Mrs Hemrajh's Reflections
“The last 2 years with the presence of the Covid infection have been extremely challenging for both learners and teachers. It is therefore obvious that any improvement to the education system is welcome. Some of the challenges faced include psychological trauma due to loss of loved ones, continued lockdown, lack of social and sportive interaction, poverty due to parents losing jobs etc. Educators need the extra edge and help to make the learning experience as positive, rewarding and successful as possible. This was the driving force behind me deciding to join the Edufundi Teach Like a Champion Program.
Being an experienced educator and having taught from Grade 4 up to Grade 12, I have tended to be a disciplinarian wanting my classes to be strictly structured. Now that I am teaching only Intermediate phase learners , I have realized that a more relaxed approach may yield better results. A style that incorporates more fun ie. The Joy Factor. The Edufundi Teaching Like a Champion Programme has helped me tremendously in this regard.
Building a positive classroom environment, and a closer rapport and empathy with learners has had an astoundingly positive impact on overall morale and ultimately the performance of learners. Instant feedback is achieved with the exit ticket where learners’ grasp of the information is immediately tested. The “STAR” approach and exit routine has improved discipline tremendously in school.
I would like to thank my mentor, Mr. Deven Naidu, for all his support, guidance and feedback. He has imparted meaningful input from his many years of experience to make this Programme a successful.
I am really proud to be part of the Edufundi Teach Like a Champion Program and I can definitely say with confidence that it has indeed improved my performance in the classroom."
Well done to our champion teacher Mrs Hemrajh and to our mentor Deven for being a champion mentor!
