Learning Never Stops: A Veteran Teacher’s Journey with Edufundi
November 12, 2024At Sinenhlanhla Public Primary School, teaching isn’t just about delivering content — it’s about nurturing potential, building confidence, and creating a space where learners feel seen and supported. For Miss Ntombenhle Mahlaba, this vision has been brought to life through her journey with the Edufundi Teach Like a Champion (TLAC) programme.
“As a teacher, I’ve always wanted my classroom to be a place where learning is exciting and meaningful,” she shares. “Through Edufundi, and with the incredible support of my mentor, Mr. Deven, I’ve gained tools that have transformed my approach and deepened my impact.”
One of the key shifts Miss Mahlaba highlights is the introduction of simple yet powerful techniques such as Threshold, Entry Routine, and Do Now activities. These practices have helped her learners settle into class more calmly and purposefully — emotionally, physically, and mentally prepared to engage.
“Starting each lesson with structure and intention has made a world of difference,” she explains. “The learners are more focused, and their performance has improved. Teaching has become more enjoyable, and the classroom feels more alive.”
Another game-changer has been the STAR technique, which encourages learners to Sit up, Track the speaker, Ask and answer questions like a scholar, and Respect those around them. Miss Mahlaba notes how this strategy has not only increased participation but also brought about noticeable improvements in classroom discipline.
“I’m truly excited to continue using these methods,” she says. “They’ve helped me build a more interactive, supportive learning environment — one where learners feel safe to grow, explore, and thrive.”
Miss Mahlaba’s reflection is a testament to the heart of the Edufundi programme: empowering teachers with practical tools and nurturing mentorship so that every child receives the quality education they deserve.
“I entered the teaching profession not knowing that I would find a second home,” she says. “Now, with Edufundi’s support, I’m more inspired than ever to help my learners reach their full potential.”
