Teaching & Learning is now Fun in my Class
August 30, 2018The Absolute Need of a Mentor
September 12, 2018I am Wendy Mavela, a teacher at Machiu Primary School the Eastern Cape and have been in the teaching profession for 35 years. As I have this vast experience I thought I knew everything, until I joined Edufundi.
In 2018 I became a mentee to Ms Vuyokazi Mafilika. The programme has been an eye opener and brought back the excitement to teaching and learning. Before Edufundi’s intervention, discipline for me and my learners was a challenge, especially at the beginning of my lesson. This chaos continued until I was introduced to the “Do Now” technique. The order was restored and time wastage in teaching time was reduced.
Various techniques have been greatly beneficial to me, such as Double plan – “WE DO TOGETHER” which has assisted me to create the platform for the learners to learn from each other. It also comes naturally to me now to use an Exit ticket to check if my objective was achieved or not. With the use of Culture of Error and No Opt Out I am now patient with my shy learners and those with special educational needs.
As a mentee and a change agent I felt the need to share with other colleagues the techniques I have learnt from Edufundi and also share the information that I received from the Teach Like A Champion workshops. Thank you Edufundi for helping me build peaceful classrooms in our school. A very big thank you to my mentor, for her patience and understanding at the beginning when we were still making mistakes. She also helped me to remember that the future of our learners rest in our hands. Teaching is so enjoyable now because of the techniques I have learnt and practised and not forgetting learner-centred lessons came with a very big change.
