A masterful mentor is someone who is able to see the mentee as he/she is as well as what he/she can become... In educational terms, mentoring is about supporting and facilitating the development of teachers. This might sound straightforward but, in practice, it requires a far more complex combination of skills, intelligences and personal traits.

Leaving Behind a Culture of Professional Development & Support

Edufundi believes in sustainability, not dependency. It is important, therefore, that the schools we support take ownership of the Programme for themselves. Once a school has graduated from the Programme, then the School Management Team – as instructional leaders – must be able to continue providing quality professional development and support.

The Girl at the Gate

Every morning on my way to work I have driven past a particular house. Like the others in that neighbourhood, the house is small and dark, with a yard that is dusty or muddy, depending on the weather. Inevitably there is a little girl standing outside at the gate, watching the comings and goings along the street.

Creating a Counter-Culture of 100%

It is all too familiar: long after the lesson has started learners are still dribbling in, showing little regard for the way they are distracting their classmates. While the teacher is talking the class is far from silent and attentive. When books are taken in for marking there are huge gaps where work has not been completed, and many books haven’t been handed in at all.

Transferable Skills

In 2017, as the Head of Grade 2 at Northwood Primary School Ms Juanita Gesoond was part of the Edufundi mentorship programme. During this time she attended the Creative Classrooms workshop, which gave her additional strategies for effective teaching and learning.

A Mentee’s Story

I am Mziyanda Mbunge, a Grade 4 English (FAL) teacher at Ebongweni Primary School in Port Elizabeth. I came to the school in 2017 from the Western Cape, where I started teaching in 2013. In 2018 Ms Bosman, my HOD, told me that I was one of the teachers who had been selected to be part of the Edufundi programme. I welcomed the offer as I saw it as an opportunity to develop myself.

Life in the Classroom as We Know it
