MENTOR LIKE A CHAMPION

Mentor Like a Champion is the final stage of our integrated Programme. This is designed to prepare teachers to become peer mentors.

Mentor Like a Champion is a training and professional development programme for the Edufundi mentors.

Since quality mentoring is our key to success, we invest heavily in giving our mentors the skills, resources and support they need to perform at their best. Interactive workshops, professional development courses and in-service support from the Support Coach ensures that they continue to refine their mentoring expertise, while team building events and a community of practice forges the bonds between them.

OUR FOCUS

Building teachers’ capacity to make everyday teaching and learning more effective

Partnering with educators and school leaders in a way that offers practical and sustainable solutions to their specific challenges has proven to make a real, measurable and concrete difference to learner achievement.

"Effective mentoring is not a natural act. Mentoring comprises a learned set of skills (tools) related to, but different from teaching. "

Mentoring Workshops

The initial training course covers the basics of mentoring as a tool for improving teaching practice, and equips participants with the skills they need to mentor teachers effectively. The course takes the form of three full-day workshops:

Workshop 1

All About Mentoring

This workshop covers the theory of mentoring – what it is and why it is such an effective tool for improving teaching practice. Participants also spend time identifying their core values and beliefs, and creating a personal vision and mission statement for their mentoring journey.

Workshop 2

“How To” Strategies

In this workshop participants start building up their mentoring ‘toolbox’. Specific skills (tools) covered include working with adult learners, communicating effectively and building relationships of trust. The steps of the Coaching Dance (listening, questioning, responding) are also introduced and practiced.

Workshop 3

Effective Mentoring

The third workshop goes deeper into the principles and practices of mentoring. Participants learn how to keep their mentoring focused and practical, as well as how to work with different mindsets. Everything is then put together as they practise the three main mentoring activities: setting a clear instructional vision, observing teachers in action, and holding a feedback session.

Everything is then put together as they practise the three main mentoring activities: setting a clear instructional vision, observing teachers in action, and holding a feedback session.

Each workshop is followed by a compulsory assignment. The final assignment is a simulated mentoring activity that requires participants to apply everything they have learned.

As part of our sustainability model a simplified version of the Mentor Like a Champion training course is offered to participating schools before they graduate from the Programme. This allows them to train up their own in-house mentors to offer continuing support to teachers.

The three ‘Champion’ programmes – TLAC, LLAC and MLAC – have one ultimate objective: to improve learner performance by making teaching and learning more impactful. Measuring improvement and success is therefore very important. Thanks to our comprehensive monitoring and evaluation strategy we are able to provide key role players with up-to-date data that can be used to track progress and assess results.
