I am Wendy Mavela, a teacher at Machiu Primary School the Eastern Cape and have been in the teaching profession for 35 years. As I have this vast experience I thought I knew everything, until I joined Edufundi.
I think if you had asked myself as a first year at my University in the states, whether I would have been in South Africa for a summer, I would have not believed you, I might have even been tempted to say you were somewhat crazy.
I am Buyiswa Monakali teaching at Ebongweni Public School at kwaZakhele in Port Elizabeth. I have been in the teaching profession for 25 years. I joined Edufundi as a mentee in January 2018. I was reluctant to join the programme but I was motivated by attending the workshops and seeing development with previous mentees at the school, now I can say loud and clear that I don’t have any regrets about being mentored.
When Mr Tukulula joined Homba Primary as principal there were no school management team meetings or staff briefings taking place. Class management was ineffective and the school was not results-driven: marks were poor, no analysis of marks were being done and there was no code of conduct in place.
Reshomile Primary School is situated in one of the most notorious suburbs in Johannesburg and is a school that has been affected by the non-availability of resources compared to the other Gauteng Edufundi supported schools.
Ms. Mtati has been a teacher at her school, Vuyani Primary in Gugulethu, for nine years. She chose to come to the school because of its good practices and rich resources. Having years of experience, Ms. Mtati said her biggest highlight since becoming a teacher has been supporting other teachers in the challenges they encounter teaching learners with learning disabilities.
Heritage is such an interesting word. It refers to your background - where and who you come from. Heritage is kind of like the History that led up to you.
From day one of our team building when we arrived in Cape Town, there was joy, fun and laughter, especially when meeting other team members from different provinces after a year of not seeing each other and welcoming new members to the team.
