November 30, 2018I am Mziyanda Mbunge, a Grade 4 English (FAL) teacher at Ebongweni Primary School in Port Elizabeth.
I came to the school in 2017 from the Western Cape, where I started teaching in 2013. In 2018 Ms Bosman, my HOD, told me that I was one of the teachers who had been selected to be part of the Edufundi programme. I welcomed the offer as I saw it as an opportunity to develop myself.
“Without mincing my words, Edufundi is a valuable programme for teachers, whether they are new to the profession or old.”
Grade 4 English Teacher
Mr Mziyanda Mbunge
My mentor is Ms Mafilika; she listens to me vent on the bad days and she also celebrates with me on the great days. After every interaction I have with her, I end up knowing more about my strengths and disposition. I have learnt a lot from this programme in terms of creating routines, designing winning lesson plans and assessing learners’ understanding.
I am confident now when I am planning and presenting my lessons as they are learner-centred. The Exit Ticket and other techniques to check for understanding have given me the ability to recognise the difference between ‘I’ve taught it’ and ‘they’ve learned it’. I relax when my learners are writing assessments because I know what they are able to do or not to do.
Having my mentor in my lessons is a bonus to me; it has helped me a lot. Edufundi, you really live by your mission statement and you are doing a great job in supporting and guiding teachers to have that desire to teach like champions.
Thank you very much!
